Life Night program provides classes to chapel community

By Pacifica Chehy 316th Wing Staff Writer

The Andrews Chapel is offering more to the base community than just Sunday services; it is now offering programs on Tuesday evenings, as well.

The base chapel is hosting "Tuesday Life Night," an evening that offers classes for nursery-age children to adults. "Life Night gives families at Andrews an opportunity to receive some quality, Biblically-based education and at the same time, build strong and lasting relationships with others," said Chaplain (Capt.) Brandon Parker, 316th Wing protestant chaplain. "The concept is that we are learning to 'Do Life Together.'"

Tuesday Life Night includes dinner and classes include AWANA, for nursery-age children through high school, Financial Peace University, a single's study on "How to Avoid Marrying a Jerk or Jerkette," a prayer group, and a women's Bible study.

Chaplain Parker said Life Night participants will be treated to a free, family-style meal before the classes are offered. "There will be a free meal available each week so parents aren't having to hurry home from work, prepare dinner, and then come back to the Chapel," explained Chaplain Parker. "Parents are able to pick their kids up from home or school without the additional worry." Meals begin at 5 p.m. and programs run from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. starting Tuesday at Chapel 3.

Both children and adults alike can participate in the various classes simultaneously. Chaplain Parker explained, "AWANA is the key piece of the evening for children. AWANA stands for "Approved Workers Are Not Ashamed" and is a Bible-centered curriculum that teaches the children the importance of knowing the word of God and practicing it in their daily lives. This program is run in over 15,000 churches around the world with over a million children and youth weekly in over 110 countries."

"Each child works through their booklets at a different pace so you can begin AWANA anytime throughout the year," said Chaplain Parker.

"The adult portion of our Life Night program, includes Financial Peace University, a 13-week seminar at Chapel 1, "How to Avoid Marrying a Jerk," a 6-week program that will be offered at the Dorm 1657 dayroom, and an adult Bible study that continues until May. The adult classes begin on September 30," explained Chaplain Parker.

The class on how to avoid marrying a jerk is directed toward the single military member. "This six-week class will help singles, 'Follow their hearts, without losing their minds,'" explained Chaplain Parker. "The class will offer techniques that will help you ask the right questions to inspire meaningful, revealing conversations, analyze your perspective mate's level of conscientiousness -- considered the window to the soul, judge character based on compatibility, relationship skills, friends, and patterns from family and previous relationships. It will also resolve your own emotional baggage so you're ready for a healthy relationship, open your eyes to problems in the relationship and stop giving a jerk too many chances, and identify and break destructive dating patterns that prevent you from finding a life partner."
