ANDREWS AFB, Md. –
Nearly twenty Team Andrews members participated in the chapel's Financial Peace University series recently.
"Statistically, 56 percent of enlisted military personnel report difficulty with family finances," said Capt. Brandon Parker, 316th Wing protestant chaplain. "Difficulties with finances transfers over to difficulties in other areas of life like marriage, work and so on. If you can gain control over your finances, it can be a catalyst for bringing change in other areas of your life." Chaplain Parker explained that during the first 91 days of FPU, the average family pays off $5,300 in debt and saves $2,700.
"This is a life-changing program that teaches you how to make the right decisions with your money," said Chaplain Parker. "I have personally gone through the 13-week course and have found the information, if utilized, is transformational."
Throughout the thirteen week series, session attendees learn a different topic each week. "The first session is called "Super Saving," that teaches seven, easy baby steps that will guide you throughout FPU. You will also learn three key reasons why you should save money and why you should start now," said Chaplain Parker. "Other weekly topics include "Relating with Money" on how spouses can work together, "Cash Flow Planning" and developing a spending plan that works, and "Dumping Debt" which covers the myths most people believe about debt."
"In the following weeks, FPU covers "Credit Sharks in Suits," which covers credit score information, "Buyer Beware," which reveals the impact marketing has on everyday decisions, "Clause and Effect" seminar on insurance, and "That's Not Good Enough" seminar on bargain shopping," he continued.
Chaplain Parker said the last few weeks of FPU cover critical pieces of the financial puzzle, as well. "At week nine, we discuss, "Of Mice and Mutual Funds," a session on investing, then "From Fruition to Tuition" which covers the maze of retirement and graduation options and following that topic, FPU covers "Working on your Strengths," lesson on employment."
"The last two weeks of the class discuss "Real Estate and Mortgages," a session on how to win when buying or selling your home and "The Great Misunderstanding," session covers how generous giving can completely revolutionize your attitude and improve finances, business and relationships."
The next FPU session begins Sept. 16 at the chapel.
