ANDREWS AFB, Md. –
The servicemembers on Andrews carry out vital missions each and every day. They perform their jobs while holding true to the Air Force core value "Excellence in all we do."
While these men and women are appreciated by all associated with them, it's not often that an individual is acknowledged on a worldwide Air Force level for the exceptional job they've done both on the job and in their community. Andrews Air Force base is home to one such Airman.
Airman 1st Class Alexander C. Luke is a public health apprentice from the 79th Aerospace Medicine Squadron and has been stationed here the last 20 months. Airman Luke is up against 15 other division winners to become the Air Force Sergeants Association First Term Airman of the Year. The ceremony is scheduled to be held Saturday-Wednesday in San Antonio.
According to Sergeants Magazine, Airman Luke developed a food handling training course for flight attendant school. This course is to be distributed throughout the Air Force.
He conducted 87 food and public facility inspections thereby minimizing the risk for more than 30,000 people, and safeguarding the Andrews mission.
He provided medical intel briefings to more than 120 deployers, monitored more than 1,500 persons exposed to hazardous noise, and swiftly quarantined 37 animals suspected of rabies, thereby saving $26,000 in treatment costs.
His excellence and professionalism earned him the Public Health Employee of the Month twice in 2007.
"I have already won at chapter and division level which is an outstanding achievement, if I were to win the AFSA award, I would know I have represented the Air Force, public health, and my family well," said Airman Luke.
"The men and women of Andrews AFSA Chapter 102 and the rest of Team Andrews would like to wish Airman First Class Alexander Luke well as he heads off to San Antonio, Texas to compete for the AFSA First Term Airman of the Year award," said Master Sgt. Charles A. Stansbury, Air Force One support section chief. "He is competing against 15 other Airmen from around the Air Force at the World Professional Airmen's Conference. Thank you to the Andrews Top 3 and the Andrews Chief's Group for helping Chapter 102 fund this remarkable journey for Airman Luke."
