Malcolm Grow Medical Center offers weight management classes

By 2nd Lt. Sarah Mueller 79th Medical Support Squadron

Whether the latest studies report that Americans gain 5 to 7 pounds during the holidays or as little as 1 to 2, the greater issue is making sure you don't allow this holiday weight to creep up slowly over the years.

This is a joyous time of the year to enjoy family, cozy homes and food.

Cookies and casseroles are to be enjoyed, and with this can come weight gain. This is nothing to feel guilty about, but should be kept in check after the holidays to prevent progressive weight gain and ultimately, chronic illnesses.

The Malcolm Grow Medical Center Nutrition Clinic is offering several weight management classes to kick off the New Year in a healthy way.

"Winning at Losing" is a one-time weight management class, which is ideal for people seeking effective weight loss methods. This class is offered on the first and third Monday of each month, and will be held in the Global Reach room, next to the dining room in the hospital from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Building Eating and Lifetyle Tools "BELT Weigh" is a family-focused weight loss program, which consists of 12 weeks of lessons and activities. Topics to be covered include healthy eating, portion control, exercise, and behavior modification. Families with children ages 10 and up, seeking to make lifestyle changes are invited to get involved.
Other programs starting up are "A Heart Needs TLC," focusing on heart healthy eating and ways to lower cholesterol, and "Hypertension 101," which is ideal for patients seeking dietary approaches to improve their blood pressure.

A new year is the perfect time to start fresh. Call the nutrition clinic at 240-857-8076 to register for a class today.
