HAWC steps in to WFC

By LaDonna Bowen 79th Medical Wing Public Affairs

Fitness buffs and individuals merely seeking to improve their overall nutritional and physical health can now do both under one roof.

Previously located above the Community Activities Center, the Health and Wellness Center has relocated to its new home at the West Fitness Center.

"By moving into the fitness center, we can better meet the needs of our people and commanders by providing a 'one-stop-shop' for health and fitness assessments, exercise prescriptions, nutrition education, and intervention programs," said Sylvia A. Goff, 79th Health Promotions Flight chief.

In the past, customers would have to travel a few blocks to receive the level of service they're now able accomplish in one visit.

We believe that being co-located is beneficial and more convenient for our customers, said Ms. Goff.

"HAWC programs emphasize healthy lifestyle and help to improve military readiness and productivity; prevent disease and injury; and promote social well-being."

While the majority of the programs are geared toward the active-duty members, there are a few programs that and open to Department of Defense civil service employees, family members and retirees.

"We currently offer new programs and fitness challenges biannually and will continue to do so," said Ms. Goff. "Our 'Step Your Way To Wellness Program' is a six week challenge that we recently kicked-off within the 79th Medical Group, is popular though this is the first time running it."

To learn about this program and others at the HAWC call 240-857-5601 or stop by its new location at the WFC at 1444 Concord Avenue.
