Nurses Week Celebration Coming in May

By Melanie Moore 79th Medical Wing Public Affairs

Malcolm Grow Medical Clinic will celebrate National Nurses Week May 6 -12, with several events to honor nurses and medical technicians. "Nurses: Advocating, Leading, Caring" is this year's theme.

"This week we would especially like to recognize, remember and celebrate our nurses and medical technicians as they provide trusted care to military service members, dependents, and wounded warriors," said Maj. Nancy Salmans, Aeromedical Staging Facility flight commander.

Nurses Week begins with a special waffle breakfast for nurses and medical technicians at the Global Reach conference room 6:30 a.m. -  8:30 a.m., May 7.

USO is sponsoring a barbecue for nurses and medical technicians at Good Samaritan Park, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., May 8.

There will be an ice cream mentoring session for nurses and medical technicians at the Global Reach conference room 1 p.m. - 2 p.m. May 9. This mentoring session will feature Shedrick Roberts, education advisor, Joint Base Andrews Education Office and Col. Sherry Cox, 779th Medical Group chief nurse. The mentoring session will explain how enlisted Air Force members can transition into the nursing career field through the use of the Education Leave of Absence Program or Nurse Education and Commissioning Program. Additionally, there will be a mentoring session offered for current Air Force nurses.

A traveling popcorn machine providing free popcorn throughout Malcolm Grow Medical Clinic is on the agenda for May 10.

Nurses Week will culminate May 11, with a 5K Fun Run. Location and time is still to be determined.

Annually, National Nurses Week begins May 6, marked as Registered Nurse Recognition Day: and ends May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, founder of nursing as a modern profession.
