A familiar clinic gets a new name

By Capt. Marquita Knight 779th Medical Operations Squadron

Physical therapy, occupational therapy and chiropractic services at Malcolm Grow Medical Clinic and Surgery Center (MGMCSC) are now referred to as the Physical Medicine Flight. Even though our name has changed, we're still located in the same place, building 1075, and continue to provide all the same services we have in the past.

"We used to be referred to as the Occupational Therapy (OT) and Physical Therapy (PT) Flight. This was confusing for patients because it did not include chiropractic services. Since all three services work together, we changed our name to be more inclusive," said Maj. Lance Mabry, 779th Medical Operations Squadron, Physical Medicine Flight Commander.

"Don't be confused by our new name. Each practice in the physical medicine flight has its own unique approach to care but they all share the same mission, helping patients recover from neuro-musculoskeletal injuries," said Mabry.

PT treats lower extremity injuries to the feet, ankles, knees, or hips as well as neck and back pain. It helps to reduce inflammation, increase mobility and increase strength. Treatments include therapeutic exercise, manual therapy and use of electrical stimulation and ultrasound.

OT specializes in treating upper extremity injuries to the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder. Services include making custom orthotics, therapeutic exercise and modalities such as a dry whirlpool to treat nerve injuries or improve joint motion. On-Site Work Evaluations to improve functional work performance is also a service provided at Joint Base Andrews, this involves redesigning work stations and educating workers on proper ergonomics.

"There is a lot of crossover between OT and PT, we are both trained extensively in anatomy and the musculoskeletal system and educate people on prevention and injury recovery. Treatment sessions typically last from 45 minutes to an hour," said Mabry.

Chiropractic care provides a hands-on approach with manipulation to treat disorders such as back and neck pain, joints of the arms and legs and headaches. Adjustments help to restore mobility, and alleviate pain and muscle tightness, allowing tissues to heal.

"There is no magical exercise for staying healthy. Keep your body moving and participate in activities that are not only fun and challenging but make you feel good. Just keep it moving!," said Capt. Chase Hamilton, 779th Medical Operations Squadron, Physical Therapist.

Active duty members can be evaluated by a physical therapist or an occupational therapist without  a referral by calling 1 (888) 999-1212.
