Join the Great American Smoke Out 5K run

By Sylvia Goff 779th Medical Group Health Promotion Manager

In collaboration with the Fitness Center, the Health and Wellness Center (HAWC) will kick off the Annual Smokeout with a 5K run Nov. 21 at 7:30 a.m. Join the fun and receive motivational items. Bring a Stick for a Stack - trade in cigarettes for gum, water bottles, stress balls and more. Members of the fitness center staff will also give "trotters" a chance to win a free turkey or ham.

If you are thinking about quitting smoking but not sure you're ready to take the plunge, maybe, The Great American Smoke Out, Nov. 21, is for you. It's an opportunity to join with other Joint Base Andrews smokers in saying "no thanks" to cigarettes, and other tobacco products for 24 hours.

The rules are simple. Quit smoking for the 24 hours of the smokeout. The great thing is that you won't be alone -- other "quitters," nonsmokers and Wingmen will be cheering you on. By quitting even for one day, tobacco users will be taking an important step towards a healthier life -- one that can lead to reducing cancer risk. Even if you don't quit permanently, you will learn that you can quit for a day and that many others around you are taking the same step, too.

For more information on becoming tobacco free, call the HAWC at (240) 857-HAWC (4292) or 857-5601.
