11th Wing hosts Individual Ready Reserve Muster

By Airman 1st Class Rustie Kramer 11th Wing Public Affairs

The 11th Wing, on behalf of Joint Base Andrews, hosted an Individual Ready Reserve Muster at the base theater April 23, 2016.

The IRR is a category of the ready reserve component of the U.S. Armed Forces and is comprised of former active duty or reserve military personnel.

"It's people that still have a military obligation after enlistment, separation or retirement," said Maj. Katy Tenpenny, 11th Wing Commander's Action Group director and point of contact for the muster. "The purpose of this muster was to make sure they were qualified or disqualified medically and to ensure their personal information was up to date."

JBA is one of 26 installations hosting an IRR muster this year. IRR members are ordered to muster who live within a 150-mile radius of a host installation.  The muster had more than 325 attendees.

"This is a historical show rate for Andrews musters over the last three years," said Capt. Avril Mitchell, Headquarters Air Reserve Personnel s Center chief of personnel readiness.

The muster started with briefings about the benefits IRR members receive and opportunities available. Recruiters from the guard and reserve were on hand during the muster.

Mitchell said having recruiters at the muster gives the IRR members the chance to re-affiliate if they wish to.

Information was presented to members regarding Tricare Reserve Select, the Montgomery GI bill, the Post 9/11 GI Bill, VA medical benefits, entitlements to a military ID card, Base Exchange and Commissary benefits, and Service Group Members Life insurance.

"We appreciate the total force partnership of the host base installation, the commander and their team," Mitchell said.

The 11th Wing, Military Personnel Section, Logistics Readiness Squadron, 459th Air Refueling Wing, 779th Medical Wing, 744th Communication Squadron and Visitor Control Center provided several volunteers to process attendee information and the USO of Metropolitan Washington contributed refreshments for muster attendees.

"It was really like a well oiled machine with everyone working together to get the event completed," said Master Sgt. Michelle Lee Miller, 11th Force Support Squadron non-commissioned officer in charge of force management and customer service.
