Ceremony displays commitment to environment

By Airman 1st Class Philip Bryant 11th Wing Public Affairs

Base leaders, local environmental representatives and Airmen gathered outside Building 1657 at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, to plant three trees in recognition of Earth Day and Arbor Day on April 22, 2015.

Three white oaks, the Maryland state tree, were planted to signify JBA's commitment to preserving environmental sustainability.

The environmental group on base ran the event and was led by Carla Jo Rupert, environmental group lead, with support from her team, Annie Hodges, Michelle Quinn, Gary Felder, and Master Sgt. Thersha Lewis, 459th Air Refueling Wing explosive ordnance disposal member.

"Trees reverse the impacts of land degradation, provide food, energy and income, while helping communities to achieve long-term economic and environmental sustainability," said Rupert.

These trees and other plantings support the base Arbor Plan that intends to reduce erosion, create cleaner air, offer temperature control, produce a habitat for wildlife, and improve the overall quality of life.

"Every one of us has the responsibility to take care of our environment," said Col. Brad Hoagland, 11th Wing commander. "It's about what you do and how you conserve today to secure tomorrow."

After the ceremonial dig, Hoagland read a proclamation that said JBA would celebrate Earth Day and Arbor Day annually.

The tree planting included speakers Horace Henry, Maryland's Forestry Service southern region urban and community forestry coordinator, and Julie Kutruff, National Capital Parks eastern district manager.

Henry and Kutruff reminded the crowd that the Earth is the most precious resource and protecting it is a collective effort.
