JOINT BASE ANDREWS, Md. –
With a new baby, come new responsibilities. That in mind, the Andrews Military & Family Support Center hosted a Bundles for Babies workshop May 2, to equip new and expectant mothers with information and guidance in preparation to welcome their newest additions.
"The goal of the Bundles for Babies program is to introduce families to the resources, services, information and support available to them through the Military & Family Support Center here," said Jeremie Bianes, 11th Force Support Squadron M&FSC work life specialist.
During the workshop, attendees received briefings covering a range of topics. They covered subjects from the financial aspect of having a baby; including what to expect monetarily within the first year, to safety; ensuring awareness of safety standards in the area.
"Bundles for Babies is informative and fun," said Bianes. "We go over budgeting, nutrition and safety, but we also play games and give away prizes. Expectant families have the opportunity to meet other families who share the same concerns and network with one another."
Ruby Merjilla, married to Senior Airman Nandieboy Merjilla, a 779th Medical Group orthopedic technician, said the event was very beneficial as they are expecting their first child soon.
"The information provided was very interesting and addressed many of my concerns," she said. "With only five weeks to go, there are a lot of worries."
Not only was Bianes able to provide information from a professional standpoint, but she was able to draw upon a wealth of her own knowledge.
"As a mother of five children, ranging from age 2 through 18, I am privileged to share my experiences and knowledge to assist others," Bianes said.
Following the workshop, the families were each given a bundle of goodies provided by the Air Force Aid Society, which included a free layette, bedding set and tote for each active-duty family.
"Bundles are provided to military families expecting a child, regardless of rank, branch of service or number of children in the family," Bianes explained. "Enrollment is also open to active-duty members and spouses with an infant of 6 months or less."
Bundles for Babies is typically offered once a quarter, however, due to the increased demand, there are seven workshops scheduled this year.
While having a baby can be exciting, programs like Bundles for Babies ensure families are fully prepared for the changes that occur after having a little one.
