Wanted: 2014 JBA Half Marathon athletes!

By Staff Sgt. Bahja J. Jones 11th Wing Public Affairs

It's that time of year again; as snow days come to a halt and frigid air dwindles, athletes gear up for another season of outdoor sports and activities. Following suit, Joint Base Andrews is hosting its second Annual Half Marathon on April 26, with opening ceremonies at 6:30 a.m., in the building 1413 parking lot, across from Outdoor Recreation.

"This is a great way for everyone to get out and enjoy the spring while also benefiting four worthy charities in light of recent fiscal challenges," said Senior Master Sgt. Dana Council, 11th Security Forces Squadron operations superintendent and JBA Half Marathon project manager.

All proceeds attained from registration fees will be donated to the Air Force Assistance Fund among others, which directly support Airmen here.

The Chief's Group initiated the annual event last year to promote unity between various units and services represented here on Andrews. Chief Master Sgt. Eliezer Cruz, 11th Security Forces Group superintendent and vice president of the Chief's Council, assisted with last years' race and noted its ability to bring the JBA community together.

"There are so many tenet units and sister service units on JBA, but we don't [often] get the opportunity to spend time together and get to know each other," he said.
Cruz will also be participating in this year's event; his first time running in a half marathon.

"I'm definitely excited to be running in the JBA Half Marathon this year, and look forward to competing against some outstanding athletes," the chief added.

First place male and female runners will receive paid entry into the 2014 Army Ten Miler and second place runners will be entered into the 2014 Bay Bridge 10K. All participants will receive goodie bags loaded with shirts and finishers medals.

Last year's winner, Brenda Shrank, finished first overall with a time of 1:24:08.

Registration for the event continues through April 18. To register, visit https://register.chronotrack.com/reg/form?eventID=6539&lc=en. The price for participants is $54.95.

In case of inclement weather, the alternate date for the half marathon will be May 10.
