Warrior of the Week

By Ms. Amber J. Russell 11th Wing Public Affairs

Staff Sgt. Bryan Winston, 11th Contracting Squadron contracting officer, works in support of the medical commodity and service community for Malcolm Grow Medical Clinics and Surgery Center, is Team Andrews Warrior of the Week.

"Ten minutes from the Fort Belvoir hospital at two a.m. and in a heavy rainstorm, he was cool under pressure," Lt. Col. Christopher Kay, 11th Wing Mission Support group commander said. "He delivered his own baby boy with his wife in the passenger seat of his BMW. I believe his ability to stay cool and safely care for his wife and fourth child, are no doubt remarkable and worthy of Warrior of the Week recognition."

Winston is being recognized for displaying all around excellence as an Airman.

On the job, Winston expertly managed 27 medical service contracts worth over $8 million ensuring military professionals and their dependents get quality care. His professional communication skills in handling contract terms has resulted in conflict resolution and ensured efficient use of government funds. He also ensured the continued service of vital medical services provided by contracted doctors, psychologists, dentists, system administrators, etc. by pre-positioning five base-year contracts valued at $400,000 in Fiscal Year 2014.

Additionally, he terminated an unused certified registered nurse anesthetist contract valued at $648,076.80. Terminating the contract initially cost $109,348.22. Winston was able to negotiate the cost claim down to $1,348.22; saving the Air Force $108,000.

Winston is fiscally responsible in every aspect of his life, Kay said.

"Winston is proud of the fact that he has absolutely zero debt," Kay said. "He has paid off his and his wife's student loans."

Winston completed Airman Leadership School in 2012 and obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from Brigham Young University Idaho in 2008.

On top of being an all-around outstanding Airman, Winston will be attending officer training school November 2013, said Kay.

For now, Winston will be taking paternity leave to spend time with his wife and four children.

"I feel the key element of my recognition is due to the fact I was able to deliver my baby," Winston said. "In which case, my wife Rachel was the real hero - shifting instantly from pregnant mom, to nurturing mom, after delivery.

"I'm honored that I can be the type of Airman to bring a positive reflection on my unit and I'm thankful my leadership set me up for success."
