Joint Base Andrews, Md. –
The 1st Helicopter Squadron conducted an Elephant Walk, a large aircraft formation in which multiple military aircraft taxi in close, nose-to-tail sections before taking off. The tradition dates back to World War II, when observers compared long lines of bombers moving across the airfield to a herd of elephants walking to a watering hole. Today, Elephant Walks highlight the importance of safety, coordination, and every person doing their job well, from aircrews and maintainers to air traffic controllers and other support personnel. The 1HS conducted this formation to prepare for possible contingency operations during the Freedom250 celebrations. Events like these help push the standard higher and reinforce dedication with the 1HS to execute their no-fail mission in the national capital region.
