National Night Out at JBA

By Airman Gabrielle Spalding 11th Wing Public Affairs

The 11th Security Forces Group and Liberty Park hosted a 2016 National Night Out event at Liberty Park welcome center on Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, Aug. 2.

National Night Out was established in 1984 and was developed as a crime prevention program that emphasizes building partnerships between the police and the community. NNO events are held across the world every 1st Tuesday of August, with the exception of Texas and a select few areas that celebrate the 1st Tuesday of October.

“National Night Out is a phenomenal way for the local community and law enforcement to build a bond,” said Master Sgt. Christopher Frank, 11th Security Forces Squadron NCO in charge of police services. “It gives law enforcement a night to show citizens that we're part of the community, approachable and like to have fun.”

The event held demonstrations from various units on base, including the 11th Civil Engineer Squadron Fire Department, 11th CES Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team and the 11th SFS military working dogs.

Melissa Arbor, wife of Staff Sgt. Matthew Arbor, who came out with her family, said it was a night to remember.

“National Night Out is important because it helps create a positive relationship between law enforcement and civilians,” Arbor said. “It’s also inspirational for kids, who look up to police officers and firefighters, to step in their shoes for an evening.”
