Be heart smart…celebrating February Heart Health Month

By Sylvia Goff 11th Medical Group

JOINT BASE ANDREWS, Md. -- The month of February has long been symbolized by the heart. The name February came from the Roman goddess “Februa,” the mother of Mars and was recognized as the patroness of passion. As health providers, health coaches, and health educators, it is our passion to improve and empower those around us to make the right choices in life for a healthier and happier heart.

As we come to the end of February, remember to spread the message of healthy hearts and keep these facts at the forefront:

  • 85.7 million, or 34 percent of U.S. adults are estimated to have hypertension
  • On average, someone in the U.S. has a stroke every 40 seconds
  • On average, One in three adults do not engage inany form of physical activity

President Lyndon B. Johnson proclaimed February as Ameircan Heart month in 1964.

"I urge the people of the United States to give heed to the nationwide problem of the heart and blood-vessel diseases, and to support the programs required to bring about its solution," Johnson said.

He clearly stated the importance of having a healthy heart. He had the foresight to recognize the health problems Americans were facing and took action.

Although messaging and campaigns for healthy hearts have helped to decrease death rates, national trends show the rate of decline is slower than in the past. This is not a reflection on what has not been accomplished, but on what still lays ahead. Let’s make some hearts happy this month!  For more information on heart health visit: https://healthyforgood.heart.org/
